English dubbing competition

English dubbing competition

On the 1st of December, the Bilingual and Heritage Divisions held the final of the Overdubbing Competition. This was the culmination of months of hard work from the students and the teachers. As the organizers and hosts, Mr. Nick Wong and Ms. Alice Zhang tasked the students with choosing an excerpt from an authentic English movie or TV show and re-recording their own voices over it, taking care to consider fluency and tone of expression. There were over 60 submissions from the student body, each containing their own special take on a scene. The goal of this event was to inspire and encourage the students with creative ways to practice and display their English abilities.

The first rounds took place in the classrooms where the English teachers viewed and scored each submission. The finalists were chosen and the preparations for the live event started. The Overdubbing Final was a cross-division event with students from Bilingual and Heritage tracks. Our Head of School, Dr. Richard Swann was joined by teachers from both divisions to judge the live performances. The entire bilingual school student body was in attendance. Parents and families were also invited to attend and support the children.

The competition was separated into lower and upper school sections with the best performances chosen from each to win one of the prizes. Each candidate brought their own individual personalities to their act and it was evident that a lot of passion and preparation went into each and every performance.

The judges had the difficult task of choosing the performances that went above and beyond the others. But in the end, they made their decision. For the lower school section, G4 Jessie Lv took the top spot with their rendition of Frozen.  G5 Zoey Li won the first prize for the upper school section with their Great Felici act. This event showcased some of the exceptional talent we have at our school. Many students were inspired to join in the next event with some already starting their preparation! Best of luck to you all!

Finally, we would like to thank all the teachers, students and parents that worked together to make the event such a success. We look forward to many such events in the future.
